How to start a SaaS affiliate program
Start with a small group of partners who already reach your ideal customers. Give them a clear offer, verify that their referrals become attributed Stripe payments, and establish how commissions will be paid before you expand.
This guide is for SaaS founders running their own program. If you use Stripe, AffiliateBase can connect referral links, payment events, commissions, and an affiliate portal. Use this planning guide first, then follow the AffiliateBase setup checklist.
1. Define the customer and the partner
Write down the customer problem your product solves and the people customers already trust for advice. For a SaaS business, that might be a consultant implementing your software, an educator teaching the workflow, or a customer who regularly recommends you.
Recruit for audience fit. A smaller newsletter about your exact workflow may be more useful than a large audience with little reason to use your product. Review each candidate's content, customer overlap, and willingness to explain the product accurately.
2. Choose commission rules your business can support
Decide whether to offer a one-time reward or recurring commissions, how long referrals remain eligible, and what happens after a refund or cancellation. Base the offer on your costs and customer retention; a competitor's percentage does not establish what your business can afford.
For illustration, a $100 eligible subscription payment at a 20% commission rate creates a $20 commission. If a $10 refund reduces the eligible payment to $90, a proportional commission would be $18. Your actual calculation depends on your configured rules, discounts, tax treatment, and eligible payment amount.
- Define the eligible sale amount and commission percentage.
- Choose the attribution window and any commission duration limit.
- Specify the payout delay, minimum threshold, and refund policy.
- Explain permitted promotion methods and review expectations.
Translate those decisions into a campaign, and review commission and fraud controls before launch.
3. Match tracking to your Stripe checkout
With Stripe Payment Links, the AffiliateBase script must be on the page containing the checkout link. For custom Checkout Sessions, the browser must send the generated referral ID to your server, which passes it into Stripe. Connecting Stripe alone does not establish that affiliate link attribution works.
Use the Stripe affiliate program guide to select your path. Developers can follow the integration quickstart. A promo-code-only program has a different setup path and does not require browser link tracking.
4. Verify the whole referral-to-commission path
- Open the test affiliate link generated by your setup flow.
- Confirm that the visit creates a referral.
- Complete the checkout and confirm that Stripe receives the generated referral ID.
- Confirm the expected payment, sale, and commission records.
- Test the billing events your program relies on, including a renewal or refund where relevant.
Use Stripe test mode for a test payment when your connected account is in test mode. If the connection is live, keep verification pending until an appropriate real checkout instead of creating a charge only to complete setup.
Follow the tracking verification checklist. A recorded click, completed configuration, and successful attributed payment are different milestones. Keep setup tests separate from real customer acquisition in your reporting.
5. Recruit and onboard your first partners
Start with customers who already recommend you, consultants serving your ideal accounts, and creators with relevant tutorials. Review their work and make a specific case for why your product would help their audience. Keep early recruitment small enough that you can learn from each partner.
Give every approved partner the commission rules, their own referral link, a short product explanation, useful examples, and a contact for questions. Agree on one initial promotion they can realistically complete. Track whether they share a link and refer a suitable customer, rather than treating a signup as an active partnership.
Use the affiliate onboarding checklist to choose between public signup, invitations, and direct onboarding. Confirm partners can find their links and earnings in the affiliate portal.
6. Prepare payouts before commissions become due
Collect the necessary payout details and review commissions after your chosen delay. AffiliateBase prepares PayPal or Wise export files; your team completes the transfers with the provider and reconciles them in AffiliateBase. Do not assume an exported file means affiliates have been paid.
Follow the bulk payout guide and keep a record of provider references. Check supported methods and eligibility before promising a payout option to partners.
7. Measure whether the program brings good customers
Review invited partners, approved partners, partners sending real referrals, referred paying customers, refunds, and commissions. Compare referred customer retention and revenue after commissions with your other acquisition channels. A large affiliate list is useful only if relevant partners participate.
Improve the step where people stall: clarify the offer if partners decline, improve onboarding if approved partners never share, and inspect checkout attribution if visits fail to become attributed payments. Expand recruitment after the first cohort demonstrates a repeatable path to paying customers.
